SACE CPTD

At EduPulse Africa, we are committed to supporting educators in achieving excellence through meaningful professional development opportunities aligned with the South African Council for Educators (SACE) Continuing Professional Teacher Development (CPTD) system.

What is SACE CPTD?

The Continuing Professional Teacher Development (CPTD) system is a professional development management system introduced by South African Council for Educators to encourage educators to grow professionally throughout their careers.

All registered educators are required to participate in professional development activities and earn Professional Development (PD) Points over a three-year cycle. Educators must accumulate a minimum of 150 PD Points across three categories of development activities:

Type 1 – Teacher-Initiated Activities

Self-driven Professional Development such as reading educational material, attending webinars, participating in workshops, mentoring colleagues, online learning, research, and professional networking.

Type 2 – School-Initiated Activities

School-based development activities including

staff workshops, professional learning communities (PLCs), school improvement projects, curriculum support sessions, and collaborative professional learning.

Type 3 – Provider/Employer-Led Activities

Formal professional development programmes offered by accredited providers, education departments, NGOs, universities, and endorsed training organisations.

How CPTD Works

Educators identify their professional development needs through performance management systems, school improvement plans, learner performance data, or self-assessment. They then participate in approved activities that address those needs and contribute to their professional growth.

Teachers are encouraged to:

  • Maintain a Professional Development Portfolio (PDP)
  • Record evidence of participation in PD activities
  • Reflect on learning and implementation
  • Report Type 1 activities directly to SACE
  • Verify Type 2 and Type 3 reports submitted by schools and providers
